Overview

NUcoat AQUA 500-UVP is a gloss UV stable single component water-based clear coat system which incorporates unique self-cross linking chemistry that improves the chemical resistance of the product.

This clear coat solution is compatible with most UV cured and solvent based inks with a very wide media compatibility. It offers superior adhesion to PVC and many other rigid substrates and has low blush once applied to printed images, with good flow and levelling properties. It is possible to apply a second coat of NUcoat AQUA 500-UVP over the first coat, once it has dried.

NUcoat AQUA 500-UVP is ideally suited for use on self-adhesive vinyl, flexible, as well as certain rigid substrates requiring additional durability, as well as scuff and chemical resistance. For optimum results, ensure a dried film thickness of approximately 20 microns, which will result in an approximate coverage of 20 square meters per litre.

DRYING TIME: PAD APPLICATOR: When using IR curing – 3 to 10 minutes; AIR DRYING: 1 to 2 hours at +23°C and 50% relative humidity; LIQUID LAMINATOR: Follow the manufacturer’s settings and instructions

INSTRUCTION GUIDE

AQUA 500‑UVP

Technical Guidelines

The Aqua 500‑UVP gloss coating produced by NUtec Digital Ink is designed to be applied in a liquid form and, once cured, will protect prints from environmental exposure and handling procedures.

1. Application of AQUA 500‑UVP

There are three main methods to apply this liquid laminate/coating:

1.1 By Hand Using a Paint Pad

  • Before each stroke, wipe excess coating back into the tray.
  • Work on a level, horizontal surface.
  • Test application stroke patterns to determine your best technique.
  • Use steady, even strokes to maintain a uniform layer thickness.

1.2 Airless Spray Gun or Airbrush Tool

  • Allows precise control of layer thickness, as with any paint application.
  • Thicker layers yield a glossier finish; thinner layers produce more of a satin effect.
  • Apply on a level, horizontal surface.
  • You may dilute the mixture with an extra 10% water to improve spray performance.
  • Clean all equipment thoroughly after use.

1.3 Automated Mayer Rod/Bar Application Machine

  • Consult the manufacturer’s guidelines for machine settings.
  • Perform test runs to check drying time and gloss level.

2. Drying or Curing

Each application method has slightly different drying and curing characteristics:

2.1 By Hand Using a Paint Pad

  • Allow the coating to dry slowly so bubbles can escape and the wet film can level out.
  • Keep the piece on a flat, horizontal surface in a dust‑free environment.
  • It is typically safe to handle after 1–2 hours, but full cure takes 24–48 hours.
  • Optional: Use infrared heating lamps to accelerate curing, but only after the film has begun to level.

2.2 Airless Spray Gun or Airbrush Tool

  • Thinner layers dry faster.
  • Let the film self‑level and release bubbles before applying external heat or forced air.
  • Touch‑dry in 1–2 hours; full cure in 24–48 hours.
  • Infrared lamps may speed curing but allow natural leveling first.

2.3 Automated Mayer Rod/Bar Application Machine

  • Adjust layer thickness, speed, and drying energy per the machine’s guidelines to achieve your desired result.
  • Full curing continues for up to 48 hours.
